Bow legs. A young child with bow legs (also called bandy legs, or genu varum). The child's legs curve outwards at the knee (especially at right). Bow leg is caused by curvature of the bones in the leg, and is very common in young children. It is a normal part of development, and usually disapp- ears as the child grows. If bowing is severe, one- sided, or persists beyond age six, surgery may be required.
