Waning Moon, photographed on 6th February 1873 by the Irish astronomer Charles E. Burton (1846-1882). The Moon is said to be waning when it is decreasing in apparent size. Burton's photographs were published in the journal of the Royal Astronomical Society and later collated by the Danish-Irish astronomer John Louis Emil Dreyer (1852-1926). Observations of the Moon with telescopes started with Galileo in 1610, and then developed further during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries as telescopes improved. Towards the end of the 19th century, the first proper photographs of the Moon were taken by combining camera and telescope technology.
