Santiago Chile La Catedral Metropolitana. Metropolitan Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas, the center of Santiago de Chile. On display is the statue of the Patroness of Chile, Reina y Madre Chile, Virgen del Carmen, or the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel, after the procession on the last Sunday of September, that marks the Day of Prayer for Chile. The Marian devotion of the Virgen del Carmen is a Catholic tradition brought from Spain to America possibly as early as 1595 by Augustinian missionaries. In Chile it is strongly associated with the military and the war of independence from Spain in 1818 and the War of the Pacific (1879–83). Main architect of the Cathedral: Joaquín Toesca y Ricci (who also build Palacio de la Moneda) The work on the current building started in 1748.
