Aflatoxin reference samples. Aflatoxin is a carcinogenic toxin produced by the fungus Aspergillus flavus. It is a common contaminant of a number of foods including nuts and grains. Food for human consumption and animal feed is routinely checked to make sure any contamination is within safe levels. These samples are made to an exact concentration and used to calibrate machines used for detection. Photographed at the European Commission's Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), Geel, Belgium.
