Homo brain comparison. Illustration of Homo naledi (left) and Homo sapiens (Jebel Irhoud) hominids showing their comparative brain sizes. The Jebel Irhoud specimen, found in Morocco, dates to around 300,000 years old and is the oldest known fossil of anatomically modern Homo sapiens. H. naledi fossils, found in South Africa, have been dated to between 300,000 and 200,000 years old. This late date is surprising considering their small brain size.
