Scottish explorer David Livingstone rescued Susi from slave traders and he became the explorer's loyal servant and friend.

David Livingstone (1813–1873) was a Scottish explorer and missionary in Africa. He is credited as the first European to see Victoria Falls, which he named for the reigning British queen. In his travels, he came upon slave traders. On one occasion, when he rescued several, one was Susi (pictured here), who then became his faithful servant and friend. When Livingstone died, Susi, and Chuma (another African servant and friend) carried his body back to England - an 8-month trek. Livingstone was granted burial in Westminster Abbey. This illustration dates to 1914.
