The caption accompanying this 1903 illustration in Gaston Maspero’s book on History of Egypt reads: “Khedive’s Palace at Bulak.” Khedive refers to the title of the viceroy of Egypt under Turkish rule 1867–1914. In 1886, the khedive's Gezira Palace (today Marriott Hotel) was constructed on the island that is known today as Zamalek, a section in present-day Cairo. Before this time, the island was simply known as Geziret Bulak or Bulak Island, in reference to the thriving 18th and 19th century fluvial port of Bulak situated on the Nile's eastern bank.
