A photographic image showing the effects of endocarditis.

A photographic image showing the effects of endocarditis. This is a defect in which the lining of the heart, (endocardium) and the heart valves become inflamed. The kinds of endocarditis are bacterial endocarditis, nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis, and Libman-Sacks endocarditis. If not treated, all types of endocarditis are quickly fatal. They are often treated with success using drugs or surgery. See also bacterial endocarditis, subacute bacterial endocarditis.
