Great Barrier Reef, satellite image. North is at top. Clouds are white. At centre left is the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, north-eastern Australia, pointing towards algal blooms and the Fly River Delta (upper centre) in Papua New Guinea (across top). Rainforests (green) are present in coastal areas, while the Great Barrier Reef (lower centre) stretches for over 2600 kilometres along the Queensland coast. The Coral Sea is at lower right. Image data obtained on 9 August 2011, by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite, part of the Earth Observing System (EOS).
