Flooded soybean crop. Researcher examining a flooded crop of soybean plants. This is an intentional form of flooding, known as flood irrigation, used in dry climates. The water is added from pipes and contained by raised earth levees. Typically, the water is allowed stand in the field for 24 to 30 hours before being drained. The beans of the soya plant (Glycine max) are edible and are cultivated and used as a source of protein in animal and human diets. Photographed in Ohio, USA.
