Portrait photo circa 1898 of millionaire American businessman and Titanic victim John Jacob Astor IV in military uniform. Astor (1864 - 1912), a member of the prominent Astor family, was a real estate developer who built the Astoria Hotel in New York City in 1897. He was also a writer and inventor and was Lieutenant Colonel of a US volunteers battalion during the Spanish-American War of 1898. Astor famously died in the RMS Titanic disaster in April 1912 - the wealthiest victim of more than 1500 people killed when the ship sank after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.
