The city was founded in 1251 by the King of Rus', Daniel Galicki. From 1340 within the borders of Poland. From 1772 under the Austrian partition, the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. In the interwar period, an important city of the Second Polish Republic. Currently one of the most important cities of independent Ukraine.
