Amsterdam canals at night near the red light district. St Nicolaaskerk Basilica of Saint Nicholas on the left. In 1887 a new Roman Catholic Church of St Nicholas was build 250m north from the old one, now called Oude Kerk or Old Church, also on the same canal. The Church of St Nicholas (Dutch: Sint Nicolaaskerk) is now the Basilica of Saint Nicholas (Dutch: Sint-Nicolaasbasiliek). The red lights in this image are all from restaurants and bars along the lively nightspot, the Zeedijk. The red light district proper starts in the small streets at either side of this bridge. The bridge of the Zeedijk and Oudezijds Kolk Lock are some of the oldest parts of the city dating to the early 15th C. The Oudezijds Kolk is usually abbreviated to OZ Kolk, but more commonly known as Het Kolkje. The canals are: the wide Oudezijds Voorburgwal Canal and the older very narrow Oudezijds Achterburgwal Canal coming in from the right. Het Kolkje is narrower still and used to be the connection from this part of town with the sea, only steps from where the St Nicolaas Church is now. View by day in the opposite direction: EA9H3C
