Henry Peter Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux, British statesman, Lord Chancellor of Great Britain

Illustration from Cassell's Century Edition History of England, pub circa 1901 Brougham supported disfranchisement of the Forty-Shilling Freeholders, as a price worth paying for the passing of the Catholic Relief Bill. He was named in the notorious Memoirs of Harriette Wilson, but paid off the publisher to secure his anonymity. He was the designer of the brougham, four-wheeled, horse-drawn style of carriage. His patronage made French seaside resort of Cannes very popular, after he accidentally found the place in 1835, he was also influential in naming the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, and holds the House of Commons record for non-stop speaking at 6 hours.
