Chestnut trees at the Nella Chestnut Farm near Hood River, Oregon, USA. This is stop #11 on the 2014 Fruit Loop. The fruit is contained in a spiny (very sharp) cupule, also called "bur" or "burr". Nella Chestnut Farm grows and sells Colossal Chestnuts. This variety is a Japanese/European hybrid developed for its large size, sweetness and ease of peeling. For almost all commercial chestnut growers the Colossal chestnut tree is the industrial producer of the largest nuts, the most nuts, and starting at a young age.
