Series of 16 gamma camera scans of the human heart representing blood flow through the chambers during one complete cardiac cycle. The sequence commences in diastole, the period between two successive contractions when the heart fills with blood and progresses through systole, when the heart contracts and pumps blood around the circulation. The bottom line of images shows the heart in diastole - filling up with blood in preparation for its next contraction. The colour- coded images are maps of the intensity and distribution of radioactivity from a tracer that is labelled to red blood cells and represent the volume of blood flowing through the organ.
