John the Baptist Bears Witness by Carracci

Saint John the Baptist Bearing Witness by Annibale Carracci, oil on copper, circa 1600. The subject of this fine picture is based on the Gospel of John: "The next day John (the Baptist) seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." The event preceded the baptism of Jesus by John. Annibale launched the vogue for landscapes in which nature is transformed by the imagination into an idyllic setting for religious or mythological stories. This beautifully preserved work was described in 1678 in the collection of the Farnese family in Parma. John the Baptist was a preacher and a major religious figure in Christianity and Islam. John is described as having the unique practice of baptism for the forgiveness of sins. Most scholars agree that John baptized Jesus. Scholars generally believe Jesus was a follower or disciple of John and several New Testament accounts report that some of Jesus' early followers had previously been followers of John. According to the New Testament, John anticipated a messianic figure greater than himself, and Jesus was the one whose coming John foretold.
