The strawberry tree (Arbutus Unedo) is an evergreen shrub or small tree with small fruits with antioxidant properties. The fruits are used to make jams, beverages, and liqueurs (such as themedronho, a type of strong brandy made in the Algarve in Southern Portugal, ). The tree gets its name ‘unedo” from the Latin meaning “I eat only one.” In Spain it has a special place as it is makes up part of the coat of arms (El oso y el madroño, The Bear and the Strawberry Tree) of the city of Madrid, Spain.
