Mappemonde en deux hémisphères. World hemispheres. LAPIE 1831 old antique

Mappemonde en deux hémisphères [World map in two hemispheres]. Artist/engraver/cartographer: Pierre Lapie, and Alexandre Emile Lapie (fils) . Provenance: "Atlas Universel de Geographie Ancienne et Moderne", Par M. Lapie et M. Lapie Fils. Dédié au Roi. Paris. Eymery, Fruger et Cie., Librairies-Editeurs, Rue Mazarine, No 30. Type: Large (folio) antique atlas map with original hand colour. Australia is named as "Notasie ou Nouvelle Hollande": the name Notasia started appearing on a number of maps of Australia in the early-19th century. It is not known who coined the name, but its most logical meaning seems to be ‘Southern Asia’ and is said to be derived from the Greek νοτος (notos) ‘south; the south wind’.
