ANATOMY OF THE FETUS

Anatomical models of the female reproductive organs during pregnancy. At seven months of pregnanacy, the fetus is approximately forty centimeters long and weights about kg. Its nervous system and lungs are almost entirely developed. The foetus is viable and has already turned to take a head-down position enabling it to have more freedom of movement. The foetus (10) floats in the amniotic fluid which fills the amniotic cavity. This cavity is surrounded by a membrane known as the amnion (11, white) to which the the chorion (purplish grey) is attached. The umbilical cord (red) links the foetus and the placenta. The placenta mainly is made up of a fœtal surface, composed of matter originating in the foetus itself (8a, the chorion) and of a maternal surface (the basal decidua, red) ; its multiple blood vessels enables the exchange of vital substances between the foetus and the mother. The interior of the uterine lining, or enometrium, (7) is covered by a mucous membrane, the decidua (in red), which will detach and be expelled along with the placenta during birth. The Fallopian tubes (red), cover the ovaries and descend alongside the uterus. At the cervix (2), a residual vestige of the uterine cavity remains (13), that elsewhere has been deplaced by the foetus and the auxiliary foeto-embryonic elements. It connects to the vagina (1).
