The early 1900s caption reads: ““NO RETREAT !"—THE AUSTRIAN POLAR EXPEDITION OF 1874.—This picture, by the famous Austrian artist, Von Payer, depicts the Austrian exploring party that discovered Franz Josef Land, the archipelago north of Asia, named after the Emperor Francis Joseph. The explorers sought to push on to the pole as well, and we see them refusing to abandon their heroic effort; but hunger and exhaustion drove them back at last.”
