Boulders of Ice on road and bridge washed out. Glacial burst (Jokulhlaup), Iceland

Glacial outburst flood from Myrdalsjokull, Iceland swept away a bridge over the Mulakvisi river. The glacial flood or burst is a mixture of water, tephra, rock and ice floes. Scientist are investigating if this was a volcanic eruption or hydrothermal water being released due to increased activity in hydro geothermal areas that are in the glacier. These floods can be dangerous due to poison gases. Date photographed July 9, 2011
