William Hunter at a confinement (childbirth). Not till after a strenuous fight with the midwives was it customary for obstetricians to be present at childbirths. William Hunter (May 23, 1718 - March 30, 1783) was a Scottish anatomist and physician. Hunter became resident pupil to William Smellie and he was trained in anatomy at St George's Hospital, London, specializing in obstetrics.
