Atlas of the Rare Vascular Plants of Ontario / Atlas des plantes vasculalres rares de l'Ontario OLEACEAE Fraxinus quadrangulata Michx. Blue ash Frêne bleu. HABITAT: Floodplains, shallow soi! over limestone, and sand spits. STATUS: Threatened in Canada (status declared by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada). Threatened in Wisconsin; rare in Iowa, Michi- gan (Barnes & Wagner 1981), Oklahoma, and Virginia. NOTES: Usually only an infrequent component of flood- plain forests, but locally common on sand spits and alvars on Point Pelee and Pelee Island. The uppermost and lowermost populations on the Thames River have been extirpated. Land clearing, especially of floodplain forests, has reduced the amount of suitable habitat along the three river systems in which blue ash occurs and grazing has suppressed seedling establishment. Populations along roadsides are threatened by road work and gravel pit expansion. Renewed interest in stone quarrying and viticulture also are potential threats to this species on Pelee Island.
