38, North American bull elk lying down in a quaking aspen grove and bugling from his bed, in the middle of the fall rut, Wapiti

Bull elk lying down in an old grove of quaking aspen adorned with its yellow fall colors. Nothing compares to the magnificence of a stately North American bull elk in the autumn during the rut (breeding season). Some Native Americans called them Wapiti (which, I’m told, is Shawnee for “white rump.”). North America’s elk are similar to Europe’s stag (red deer), and Europeans tend to call N. Am. elk "moose." Whatever you call them, bull elk that strut with 40# antlers held high are magnificent to see.
