Catalogue of Circumpolar Stars (1857), title page. This catalogue consisted of observations made from the Redhill Observatory, England, in the years 1854, 1855 and 1856. The observatory is shown in the illustration. The observations and catalogue were made and edited by the British astronomer Richard Christopher Carrington (1826-1875), Fellow and Secretary of the Royal Astronomical Society. It was published in London in 1857. The catalogue consisted of observations of the positions of over 3735 stars located near the North Pole. Since this information was essential for navigation at sea, the catalogue was published by the Admiralty at public expense.
