Mental diseasesA text-book of psychiatry for medical students and practitioners . due to osmosis, and it encroacheson the cavity in which it lies surrounded by its nutrient nerve cell alters in shape and becomes rounder. Thechromatoplasm composing the Nissl bodies gets broken up,and the granules are finally disintegrated into a fine dust(chromatolysis), those at the periphery of the cell being usuallyfirst affected. The delicate fibrils of the matrix becomesimilarly broken up (achromatolysis), and take the stain morereadily than they do normally. The nucleus of the cell altersin contour, is less distinct, falls to the periphery, and sobecomes eccentrically placed from lack of support. Vacuola-tion of the cell occurs as the matrix disappears. The axonand dendritic processes (or dendrons) of the cell becomevaricose, then shrivel and finally disappear as the cell a homogeneous unstained mass results, and ultimatelya granular scar is left. Surrounding the nerve cell thelymphatic space is enlarged, and it contains many satellites. Xucleus. © 6. W © #? ®
