Fertilisation, illustration. Fertilisation occurs when the sperm's (left) genetic material, DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) penetrates an egg (right). After fertilisation (centre) the egg contains two pronuclei (round), one from the egg (green) and one from the sperm (red). When they fuse (top), the egg becomes a zygote containing the full complement of chromosomes.
