The plaque commemorates the Canal Duke, Francis Egerton of Berkhamsted, 1735 to 1803 erected on the 200th anniversary of his death in 2003. He was the 3rd Lord Bridgwater and lived at Ashridge near Berkhamsted. He is known as the father of the inland waterways system
