Silicosis of the human lung. An acquired disease of the lungs arising from inhalation of silica dust associated with occupations such as mining and sand blasting. The dust particles become permanently embedded into alveoli and smaller respiratory passages and cannot be cleared by mucus or coughing. Silicosis causes inflammation and accumulation of excessive collagen (fibrosis) forming nodular lesions (grey/black) particularly in the upper lobes of the lungs. Blood vascular components have been stained red, and bronchi/connective tissues stained blue.
