Thracian Gladiator

This illustration, dating to 1884, shows a Thracian gladiator ready to fight an opponent. It is a copy of a design found on an uncovered terra-cotta lamp. Gladiators who fought as Thracians were lightly armed, carried a small round or square shield (called a parma), and a very curved sword (called a sica). Here, he is not wearing the typical metal helmet, with a crest ending in the form of a mythical creature. Nor is he wearing the traditional tall leg guards (greaves).
