Adult female in nuptial plumage: Above, including wings and tail, dull, dark "slate gray" or brownish-slate (a bluish suffusion on upper back) extending down on sides of breast and there mix- ing with white ground color; upper back and scapulars with two buffy or yellow- brown stripes forming a "V" on back; sides of lower back and rump largely white; outer upper tail-coverts white streaked or shaded gray; larger middle wing-coverts narrowly tipped white, greater wing-coverts broadly so tipped; sides of neck and fore neck "rich rust red " ; chin, throat, small spot over eye, and under plumage white including axillars and most of wing-linings; sides and flanks white with dusky shaft- p M streaks; bill black; iris dark brown; legs and feet bluish-gray, to greenish-gray, p lead color or dusky, webs lighter. Adult male in nuptial plumage: Similar to female but much duller in color; gray upper plumage duller, less uniform; fore face, including fore- head, chin and throat, largely white; rusty red of neck much duller and largely confined to its sides ; some reddish on back and scapulars; sides of breast mixed white and dark grayish, more or less tinged rusty red; iris brown; bill black; legs and feet dusky.
