A large, branching shrub, sometimes 3 to 4 meters high, the branches widely spreading, glab- rous; spines single, white, long (6 cm. long), very stout; leaves fleshy, somewhat persistent, obovate to elliptic, sometimes nearly orbicular, 3 to 4 cm. long, glabrous; flowers yellow; fruit red.
