In 1911 a branch of the Newfoundland railway was opened on the Bonavista peninsula. Because the town of Trinity is located on the coast and surrounded by steep hills the track was diverted for two kilometres in a loop to gradually lose height (similar to the technique used on a larger scale in western Canada). The line was closed in 1984 and the loop was to be demolished but following a campaign to preserve it the whole area was given to the town of Trinity. A purchaser turned the area into an amusement park with train rides round the loop. In 2004 the park closed and in 2010 it was hit by Hurricane Igor. Today the park is derelict and abandoned in the wooded countryside outside the town of Trinity.
