The Roman army under Julius Caesar lay siege to the city of Alesia in eastern Gaul, during the time when Caesar was fighting the Gallic Wars. Commanding the Gauls was the Gallic general Vercingetorix. Caesar directed his troops to erect a series of extensive fortifications, including two walls encircling the city, to keep the defenders in and potential reinforcements out (seen here). Vercingetorix’s resistance and surrender marked the final major military engage
