Anaesthetic inhaler, 1901. This is part of a Hewitt's Inhaler, designed by Sir Frederick William Hewitt (1857-1916), an English anaesthetist. In 1901, he introduced his wide-bore ether inhaler, a modified version of the Clover Ether Inhaler. It could be refilled with ether while in use, and had a mask (not seen) which screwed into place. It admitted a larger volume of air than previous inhalers, making it easier for the patient to breathe. This modification speeded induction (the first stage of inhalation anaesthesia).
