Comparison of a selection of aborted Tsetse fly (Glossina morsitans) larval pregnancies showing range from 1st instar to almost fully developed

Tsetse fly larvae complete their entire development within the uterus of the adult female fly and are fed on a "milk" secretion provided by the female. If the female is stressed ( if food is in short supply) or environmental conditions are not ideal, the pregnancy may be aborted at any stage in the larval development. This photo illustrates a range of abortions from first instar to almost full grown.
