The Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the cathedral church of Nardò, in the province of Lecce. Located in the heart of the town of Salento, is a national monument since 1879 and in 1980, during the episcopate of Antonio Rosario Mennonna, has been elevated to a minor basilica. The cathedral is probably the place where, at one time, was founded the ancient church of Sancta Maria de Neritorio, by some Eastern monks who in the seventh century escaped the iconoclastic persecution. The monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is present since 1088. The body of the building was modified over the centuries, starting from 1354 when the abbot Azzolino De Nestor rebuilt the facade, collapsed following an earthquake, and reached the nave with two chapels on each side, creating two aisles. Other consolidations were made in the first half of the fifteenth century, probably after the earthquake of 1456, until the reconstruction of the facade in 1725, under the episcopate of Antonio Sanfelice, by the architect Ferdinando Sanfelice, brother of the Bishop, who also many works of reconstruction of the interior in the style of (baptistery 1728).
