Hottentot fig (Carpobrotus edulis) thicket at the coast, in Portugal. This plant, also called the ice plant, is native to South Africa, but has been introduced to many subtropical regions for its edible fruit, and as an ornamental. However, it has spread from cultivation in many areas, and is highly invasive, outcompeting native plants in arid coastal regions. It can regenerate from deep roots, so removal of the plant is difficult and time consuming.
