Istanbul: Muslims at the Saint George Monastery - 23/04/2014 - Turkey / Istanbul / Buyukada - Asian missionaries trying to convert Muslims to evangelical Christianity along the way of the monastery. Saint George is one of the figures who has led to most cross-fertilisations between Christians and Muslims in the eastern Mediterranean. Off the coast of Istanbul, on the summit of the island of Bu¨yu¨kada, is the Greek Orthodox monastery of Saint George. Celebrations of the saint’s feast day on 23 April draw as many as 100,000 people, many of them Muslims. Most of them come to make wishes, which take various ritual forms. Aya Yorgi is popular because he is reputed to be efficacious and makes no distinction between Christians and Muslims.
