Dowsing. William Stone, 19th century British water diviner, beside a spring he claimed to have found using the forked rod in his hands. Dowsing is a branch of divining (meaning \finding\"). The diviner loosely holds a rod which spontaneously points upwards or downwards when carried over an underground object such as a spring. With Queen Victoria as one of his patrons, Stone was an immodest, self-important but shrewd businessman who claimed many dowsing successes. Although still used widely, divining has no scientific basis nor is there conclusive proof that it works. Photographed in 1892 from the Daily Graphic and entitled A Water Wizard in the Isle of Wight."
