UK Romanians and their supporters wearing red and green miners' helmets protested for the thirteenth week in what has become an ongoing, worldwide protest to prevent the establishment by Rosia Montana Gold Corporation of a vast opencast mine in Rosia Montana in the Transylvania area of the country. Whilst hundreds of new jobs are promised by the mine, it is claimed that thousands of people living there will lose their livelihoods. In addition, the cyanide leaching process deployed in gold mining to extract the precious metal poses a danger to the environment and groundwater supplies. It is reported that up to 13,000 tonnes of cyanide will be used annually. The protesters are also highlighting the practices of gas exploration companies who are allegedly exploiting the region's poverty by offering paltry payments to farmers to explore for possible fracking sites on their land.
