An 1897 illustration showing how to revive a drowned mariner using the 'Howard's Method" invented by a doctor Howard. It was first adopted in 1869 with the instructions to first press the back of the lungs with the patient's stomach raised on his clothing,next he was to be laid on his/her back and the lower ribs pressed with the rescuers hands to expel air from the lungs and then released to allow the lungs to fill with air.
