Brown and white Shire horse standing in sunshine on green grass inside electric fence. White bliss. White flaxen hair covering half face.
These horses are found several places, and seem to have their roots from mainland Europe. As warriors and knights got increasingly more armed and armored, they needed stronger horses. These were imported from France, Belgium and Flanders to England, and consequently bred into Shire horses, Clydesdale and others. They are easy-handled and good natured. Their main functions were to carry weight, and eventually to pull weight. They became popular as brewery horses used to pull out ale to customers. Today, some are used as "ale horses", others for recreation and still others for show and promotional purposes. This one was a member of a herd of 15 horses running freely on the shores of Limfjorden in Denmark - freely as "behind fences".
