Portable high resolution CT scanner with fossil CT (computed tomography) scanner fires beams of X-rays (left) at different angles around the skull (centre). The X-rays are detected on an imaging plate (right) and the data converted by computer into a 3D model. This scanner can image objects up to 300 millimetres by 600 millimetres. It has a resolution of up 5 microns (millionths of a metre) which is much more sensitive than medical scanners. The scanner, together with computer workstations, is transportable inside a large container, making it possible to be used in remote locations.
