Hop storage area at the derelict Cannon Brewery (Stones Brewery), Neepsend, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, UK

Founded in 1868 by William Stones, The Cannon Brewery of Neepsend, Sheffield, South Yorkshire was taken over by Bass one hundred years after it started. In 1999 Bass closed the site due to concerns of falling sales with a loss of 57 jobs. Stone’s Bitter was one of the most popular beers was linked to sponsorship with Rugby League. A member of the Bass board of directors that took the decision to close the brewery has admitted that, given the subsequent resurgence in golden ales it was a mistake having backed their other main brand Worthington instead.
