The yellow Hibiscus glaber is a species endemic to the Bonin Islands now called Ogasawara Islands. Two woody Hibiscus species are found - the Hibiscus glaber Matsum is endemic to the islands and its ancestral species, Hibiscus tiliaceus although the latter is widely found elsewhere in the tropics and subtropics.
