The town of Gien on the banks of the River Loire in France
The town of Gien is on the Loire river in the Loiret department of France. A great deal of Gien town centre was destroyed during the Second World War during German occupation with major restoration works being carried out post-war. Chateau de Gien was substantially rebuilt as a hunting lodge of Anne de Beau (daughter of Louise XI) around 1500. It suffered substantial damage during the war in 1940 and underwent a major refurbishment between 2011-2014.
