East House Burra History Group Cottage and thatched outbuildings. SCO 7423

The Burra History Group was formed in 1996, to share their knowledge and studies of local history and promote awareness and conservation in the community. Exhibition themes have included fishing, seafaring, crofting, weddings, entertainment, hall centenary & crafts. They also annually produce a pictorial calendar & organise a range of community events including Sunday teas & regular makkin nights. Not long after their formation, the group started a project, involving the renovation of a stone cottage with a distinctive ‘taekit’ roof, which is now ‘Easthouse’. Thanks to great effort, it has been restored as a Heritage Centre and is again playing a valuable role in the community. At ‘Easthouse’, there is an exhibition of historical photographs and other materials on display during the summer. The rest of the site has many other interesting features to explore and discover. Easthouse is available for hire at a very reasonable rate. Groups & individuals have used the building for a variety of events including a marriage, a remembrance service, musical nights, art sessions etc. The Burra History Group meet regularly all year round.
