Venice, Italy - 5 September 2017 as usual, the canals and bridges are jam-packed with tourists. Venice is one of the great cities of the world, famed for its canals, sublime architecture, beauty and exotic history. It is also inundated by tourists for much of the year, stupidly expensive, often smelly and slowly sinking into the Adriatic. Oh dear - you pick. The canals of Venice are its life - blood; they are the most important way of getting around for local and tourists alike. Public transport by water busses - vaporetti - and water taxis is quick and efficient. Needless to say, only tourists use the gondolas! The canal banks are lined with historic palaces, hotels and churches, dating primarily from the 13th to 18th centuries. Here we see the Ponte della Paglia, a small bridge which links the front of Palazoo Ducale to the front of the new prison. In the distance, we see the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute
